Push-Down Lever
Pressing the lever down clamps the can and starts the motor, so the only effort is a light press rather than squeezing and turning a handle.
The POHL SCHMITT Electric Can Opener is a grip-free can opener with extras, best for people with arthritis. Rated 4.1 out of 5 across 5,854 user ratings. The main drawback: loud while it runs. We scored it 4.1 out of 5.
For hands with arthritis or a bad shoulder, the POHL SCHMITT's push-down lever turns can opening into a one-finger job; the price of that ease is a loud motor and durability that is less certain than the build suggests.
NoFussDeal rates the POHL SCHMITT Electric Can Opener 4.1 out of 5. Last updated September 26, 2026.
Pressing the lever down clamps the can and starts the motor, so the only effort is a light press rather than squeezing and turning a handle.
A built-in magnet grabs the lid as the cut finishes and lifts it away from the can, so you never have to fish it out of the food.
A knife sharpener and a bottle opener are built into the housing, so one appliance covers three small jobs.
The cutting lever detaches so it can be rinsed, and the power cord stores inside the body when the opener is put away.

Set the opener on a stable, level counter near an outlet and pull out as much cord as you need from the storage compartment.
Lift the lever and hook the can's rim under the cutter so the lid sits against the magnet.
Press the lever down. The motor turns the can and cuts around the lid; hold the can lightly if it is very tall or heavy.
Lift the lever to release the can. The lid stays on the magnet so you can dispose of it without touching the cut edge.
For most buyers, yes: we score it 4.1 out of 5. The POHL SCHMITT does what an electric can opener should: press the lever, and the can turns and opens while a magnet holds the lid.
Rated 4.1 out of 5 across 5,854 user ratings, with 64% giving it five stars and 12% one star.
Leaves a jagged edge on the lid rather than a smooth one. Reports on durability are mixed, with some units stopping working.
Detach and rinse the cutting lever regularly so food does not build up. Wipe the magnet and housing with a damp cloth.
It handles big cans, but steady a tall or heavy can with your free hand so it turns evenly and the cut stays on the rim.
The POHL SCHMITT does what an electric can opener should: press the lever, and the can turns and opens while a magnet holds the lid. The weighted base keeps it steady, the cutting lever detaches for rinsing, and it copes with large and pop-top cans. Its best audience is anyone with arthritis or limited grip. Against that, it is loud, it leaves a jagged lid edge, and some units give out sooner than they should. The sharpener and bottle opener are bonuses.
If manual openers hurt, this lever-operated model is an easy fix. If you want a quiet opener or a smooth-edge lid, look for a side-cutting design instead.
