Underneath the extras it is a twist ballpoint, and it writes smoothly, which matters because the pen is the part you use most. Spare ink refills come with the set, and one owner found two extra refills alongside the one already in the pen. The refills are the weak point of the design. To fit the tools into the barrel, the ink cartridge is very small, so it runs out sooner than a standard pen and needs replacing more often. The spares do not store inside the pen, as one owner points out, so put them in a drawer or glovebox where you will find them. For occasional writing, jotting a measurement or signing a delivery, that is no hardship; as a daily note-taking pen it will need refills often.
