Will on-ear headphones be comfortable for me?
It varies more between people than almost any other headphone characteristic, which is why buyers are split on comfort. On-ear cups press the ear cartilage against the head, and pressure there accumulates: some owners wear these comfortably for long periods, while one feels it after about 20 minutes, and the same pair honestly produces both reports. Wearing glasses makes it noticeably worse, because the arms are pressed into the side of your head by the cups. Buy from somewhere with easy returns and wear them for a full two-hour stretch inside the return window.
Are these good for flights and commuting?
Not especially, and this is the main reason to look elsewhere. Without active noise cancellation, the low droning frequencies that dominate aircraft cabins, trains and buses pass through the cushion almost untouched. You will end up listening louder than you should to compensate, which is a hearing risk rather than merely an annoyance. The included cable does make them easy to plug into a seat-back screen, which one parent likes for flights. For music at a desk, at home, walking, at the gym or on a call, the absence of cancellation is not a loss.
Can I listen over a cable?
Yes, two ways. Beats includes both a 3.5 mm analog cable and a USB-C to USB-C cable, and says either one carries high-resolution lossless audio. The analog cable also keeps them working when the battery is flat, and lets you connect to anything without Bluetooth.
How long do they take to charge?
A full charge takes a little over two hours, and Fast Fuel gives up to five hours of playback from ten minutes on the cable, enough to rescue a commute discovered flat at the front door. As with every rechargeable device, expect the 50-hour figure to decline over a few years of daily cycling. Beats includes the USB-C cable but not a power adapter, so you will need one of your own.
How far can I move from my phone?
Beats says further than most. It uses Class 1 Bluetooth on Bluetooth 5.3, which it calls industry-leading for extended range and fewer dropouts. Walls and bodies still shorten the range, so treat it as freedom to move around a room or two rather than a guarantee across a whole house.
How do I stop the hinges breaking?
Buyers are mixed on durability, so the habits are worth forming. Take them off with two hands rather than dragging them forward off your head by one cup, which stresses one hinge repeatedly. Fold them deliberately and keep them in the protective case that comes with them rather than crushing them into a full backpack, and do not leave them looped over a monitor or a car mirror where the headband is held stretched for days. Ear cushions are also the part most likely to wear first, though Beats says it designed the UltraPlush cushions for durability as well as comfort.
