Fast Folding Probe
The probe folds into the body and swings out to take a reading, and that same movement is the power switch: open it and the display comes on, fold it back and the unit turns off. It sounds like a small thing, but it removes the most common way a battery thermometer dies early, which is being left on in a drawer. Alpha Grillers rates the response at 1 to 2 seconds. In practice, a fast thermometer is less about saving seconds than about getting an honest reading: a slow one tempts you to pull it out before the number settles, and the reading you remember is the one it showed on the way up. With a quick probe you can check the thickest part, move to a second spot and still close the grill lid promptly. For a whole chicken or a thick roast, that second reading matters, because the centre of the thickest part is the last place to come up to temperature, and a tip that has slipped into a thinner section or up against a bone will read high. The folding design also protects the tip in a drawer, and the whole unit measures 6.73 inches long, short enough to keep in an apron pocket.
